Since we are now in lockdown 3 and finding our way through winter I thought I would share my favourite books on mental wellbeing. Life long learning is one of the best way to stay on top of our health.

Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions

“You aren’t a machine with broken parts. You are an animal whose needs are not being met.” ― Johann Hari

In Lost Connections, Johann Hari lays out a series of good solutions and reasons for depression. He challenges many of the current conceptions of why depression exists in the first place. And he does this in such a way that is very easy to understand, and digestible for most people. 

I did not know this when I started to read to book, be he suggest meditation as one of the many solutions for improving our mental wellbeing. For obvious reasons, I’m in favour of this.

Meditation has been an integral part of my mental wellbeing practices for many years. 

Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams

“Sleep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day — Mother Nature’s best effort yet at contra-death.” ― Matthew Walker

I have been an enormous advocate for sleep for many years, and this book really hits the nail on its head about the benefits of sleep on our mental wellbeing.

The science, the stories, everything about this book is compelling.

Better Boundaries: Owning and Treasuring Your Life

I read this book after coming out of a problematic relationship where I did not honour my boundaries. This book gave me an easy to understand explanation of boundaries and help me to understand them better. I did not grow up learning about boundaries, and this book showed me the way. After learning about boundaries, and how to implement them my mental wellbeing improved drastically.

How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain

“Emotions are not reactions to the world; they are your constructions of the world.”

― Lisa Feldman Barrett

Lisa postulates the theory of constructed emotions, and I felt reading this book that she could put into words many of the ideas that I already had in my mind. I think her writing is easy to understand and gave me greater insight into how emotions work on a physical level. 

One of my key-takeaways from this book is to always be curious. The assumptions that we make about other people are rarely the entire truth.  

The Promise That Changes Everything: I Won’t Interrupt You

I’m a qualified time to think coach, situated within ‘The Thinking Environment’, and this book is by the founder Nancy Klein. When I was first introduced to this approach back in 2015, it impacted me hugely. I could not recommend this book enough. There is something profound that happens with one’s thinking when we make a promise not to interrupt each other.  

The Alchemist

“The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.” ― Paulo Coelho

I did not read this book until very recently, and I think my key takeaway from this, albeit it being a fictional book you can find the truth about life in a grain of sand and within yourself. 

All you have to do is look. I have found that through meditation, and looking within, answers for my life has come forth and then in turn improved my mental wellbeing.

Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

“You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft, that you will die without ever realizing your true potential.” ― David Goggins

David Goggins is not everyone’s cup of tea, but for someone interested in performance and self-improvement, I think this is a must-read. His story is incredibly motivational and shows that through hard work, you can achieve incredible feats. 

For anyone who wants to enhance their mental wellbeing, this is a must read.
